First Dental Visit
Welcoming Little Smiles in Newcastle
A child’s first dental visit is an important milestone.
At Junction Village Dental, we aim to make early dental experiences positive, calm and educational. These first appointments are gentle introductions designed to help children feel comfortable in the dental environment.
When Should My Child First Visit?
We recommend children attend their first dental visit by their first birthday, or when their first tooth appears.
Early visits allow us to:
- Monitor tooth development
- Provide preventative guidance
- Support healthy habits from the beginning
- Identify concerns early
In many cases, the first visit is simple and focuses on building familiarity rather than treatment.
What Happens at the First Appointment?
Every child is different, so we tailor the appointment to their age and stage of development.
A first visit may include:
- A gentle look at the teeth
- Checking how the teeth are developing
- Discussing brushing techniques with parents
- Talking about diet and oral health habits
- Answering any questions
For very young children, this may be done with the child sitting on a parent’s lap.
Our goal is to create comfort and curiosity, not overwhelm.
A Child-Friendly Environment
We understand that children may feel unsure about new experiences.
From “magic noses” that help operate the chair, to Biscuit the oral health pup who needs his teeth brushed, and the magical tooth fairy door in Jess’s surgery, we use playful, age-appropriate tools to help children feel engaged and relaxed.
These small touches help build familiarity and positive association with dental care.
Supporting Parents
We know parents often have questions about:
- Dummy use
- Thumb sucking
- Teething
- Brushing techniques
- Fluoride
- Diet and snacks
We take time to provide practical, supportive advice tailored to your child.
What If My Child Is Nervous?
It’s completely normal for children to feel unsure.
We move at your child’s pace and focus on gentle introduction. Sometimes the first visit is simply about meeting the team and becoming familiar with the surroundings.
Positive early experiences help build confidence for future visits.
Ongoing Preventative Care
Regular check-ups allow us to monitor:
- Tooth eruption
- Jaw growth
- Early signs of decay
- Oral hygiene habits
Preventative care from an early age supports long-term oral health.
