Children’s Preventative Dental Care
Supporting Healthy Smiles from the Start
Preventative dental care plays an important role in supporting children’s long-term oral health.
At Junction Village Dental, we focus on early identification, education and practical guidance to help reduce the risk of dental decay and support healthy development.
Our approach is gentle, age-appropriate and tailored to each child.
Regular Check-Ups
Routine dental examinations allow us to monitor:
- Tooth eruption and development
- Jaw growth
- Early signs of decay
- Oral hygiene habits
- Bite changes
Children’s mouths change quickly as they grow. Regular visits allow us to identify concerns early and guide families appropriately.
The recommended recall interval varies depending on individual risk factors.
Professional Cleaning (Airflow Guided Biofilm Therapy)
Where appropriate, professional cleaning may be recommended to remove plaque and surface staining.
We offer Airflow Guided Biofilm Therapy as part of preventative care. This uses warm water, air and fine powder to gently remove plaque (biofilm). Suitability is assessed based on the child’s age and individual needs.
Professional cleaning supports gum health and reinforces good oral hygiene habits.
Fluoride Treatment
Fluoride may be recommended to help strengthen enamel and reduce the risk of decay.
Topical fluoride application is quick and is based on individual risk assessment. We will discuss whether fluoride is appropriate for your child during their appointment.
Dental X-Rays for Children
In some cases, dental x-rays may be recommended as part of a child’s preventative care.
Children’s enamel is thinner than adult enamel, which means tooth decay can progress more quickly once it develops. Early stages of decay are not always visible when looking directly in the mouth, particularly between the back teeth where they touch.
X-rays allow us to detect concerns that cannot be seen during a visual examination alone.
We only recommend x-rays when clinically indicated and in accordance with current guidelines. The frequency of imaging depends on your child’s individual risk factors and oral health history.
If x-rays are advised, we will explain why they are recommended and answer any questions before proceeding.
Monitoring Growth and Development
As part of preventative care, we also monitor:
- Spacing and crowding
- Bite development
- Jaw growth
In many cases, no immediate treatment is required, simply ongoing observation. If concerns arise, we guide families through appropriate next steps.
Supporting Healthy Habits at Home
Preventative care extends beyond the dental chair.
We provide practical advice tailored to your child’s age, including:
- Brushing technique
- Appropriate toothpaste use
- Dietary guidance
- Managing sugary snacks and drinks
- Advice for sports mouthguards
We aim to support families in building consistent oral health habits at home.
Early Intervention Matters
Tooth decay in children can develop quickly. Regular preventative care allows concerns to be identified and managed before they progress.
Our goal is to support children in maintaining healthy teeth through childhood and adolescence.
